Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd

Mind Over Matter celebrates the designs of Storm Thorgerson. Including over thirty pieces of his work for Syd and Pink Floyd – not least the album covers now regarded as modern classics – the exhibition represents the first time Storm’s work has been shown in his hometown of Cambridge.

For the first time ever, the city that gave birth to one of the biggest bands in rock history will play host to Storm Thorgerson’s exhibition Mind Over Matter: The Images of Pink Floyd, fresh from its UK premiere on London’s South Bank. Cambridge residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to witness this unique celebration of the city’s most famous musical sons from October 9th to November 10th.

The Grand Arcade will provide the hugely spacious and contemporary backdrop to this panoply of Pink Floyd photographs, spanning the period from Saucerful of Secrets in 1968 to the present day. Traces of Cambridge can be followed throughout the images, from the riverside meadows and scarecrows of Barrett’s quintessentially English whimsy, to the variation on the inimitable Dark Side triangle that provides an alternative, Floyd-centric road map of the city.

Interviewed last month about the exciting prospect of the transfer of Mind Over Matter to Cambridge, Storm was clearly delighted to be returning to the town where Syd once jammed at their teenage parties, back when musical and artistic success were barely a distant dream on the horizon of eager youth.

“My mother’s still there, our physical roots – my house, the schools, the parks are still there, the river, the punts are still there. I have very fond memories of Cambridge, of my time in Cambridge, to which I feel very attached, and I’m extremely happy to be doing a show there.”
