The Madcap by Malcolm Boyle

A play about Syd Barrett, Psychedelia and the 60s

written and performed by Malcolm Boyle

Film by Marc Gogarty

Malcolm Boyle’s original live art theatre show The Madcap is a multi-media journey into the psychedelic 60s underground as seen through the distorted mental lens of Syd Barrett - the legendary genius behind Pink Floyd. In this critically-acclaimed solo show, award-winning performer and musician Malcolm Boyle combines tragicomic performance, hallucinatory original film and archive slide projections with his own 21st Century interpretations of Barrett’s songs.

The Madcap plays out the story of Syd’s sudden rise from bohemian alternative London to the heights of pop stardom, and his eventual flight from public life against a backdrop of political rebellion, hallucinogenic drugs and psychedelic music.

The show was premiered at the Brighton Festival, and went on to tour the UK, sell out London's ICA and headline three nights in the Glastonbury Festival theatre tent.

The revival of The Madcap in April 2007 led to Malcolm performing an excerpt on BBC Radio 4’s “Today” programme.

Malcolm Boyle

Malcolm Boyle is an award-winning performer, director, writer and musician who works in television, radio and live on stage. He has recently been seen taking a lead role in the Johnny Vegas sitcom Ideal (BBC3), made his big-screen debut in The Sofa (Clockwork Films), has been heard taking lead roles in the Graham Duff radio comedy Stereonation (BBC R4), has written scripts for Bob Mortimer (Five); comic sketches for Mrs Merton and Sean Ryder (BBC R1), and spent time as resident comic writer on BBC Radio One’s Mark Goodier Show. Malcolm also hosted Channel 5’s Rock Day, and his other television work includes Carmen (BBC 2).

The Madcap is part of a body of work by Malcolm inspired by underground culture and psychedelia. He was the man behind The Recurring Technicolor Dream – a 14 hour mixed media event celebrating the 30th anniversary of 1967’s 14 Hour Technicolor Dream - London’s first full scale all-night psychedelic rave. The event featured artists like the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown and John’s Children who performed at the original 60s happening. Malcolm’s psychedelic music project Teknikolor toured the continent, and he co-produced the documentary film Avalon, A Field In Glastonbury for Channel 4.

In addition to The Madcap, Malcolm’s original stage work includes the Barclay’s New Stages Award-winning The Joy Of Return produced by his performance company Limn Gaza. This show took its audience on a cross-country journey by steam train, and continued the site-specific work Limn Gaza had begun with After Parade – a performance set in an abandoned multi-storey car park which won the Brighton Festival award for Best Show. Malcolm was also one half of Wax Cabinet – a comedy double act with Graham Duff.

A sequel to The Madcap is also in the offing.
