It is close to the centre of Cambridge and a 10 minute walk from the rail station. Buses from the station and the city centre (Drummer Street) stop immediately outside the building.

Pay and display parking is available in St Paul’s Road. There is a multi storey car park ten minutes’ walk away at Gonville Place and an NCP car park at the rail station.

Concert Performances – The City Wakes

Centred on fresh interpretations of Syd’s songs – including Bike, See Emily Play, Jugband Blues, Dominoes and Arnold Layne – the title piece of The City Wakes opens the door into Syd’s world.

Directed by award-winning musician and composer Simon Gunton, and featuring Tor, The City Wakes features cutting-edge video art from celebrated choreographer and film artist Darren Johnston, stunning psychedelic lighting from Peter Wynne Willson, Pink Floyd’s original designer, and a guest appearance by The Grasshopper’s Green Herbarian Band. The production’s set – based on early 1960s memorabilia – is a superb and fitting backdrop.

The City Wakes stage production will take place on the 24th, 25th and 31st October 2008 at The Centre at St. Paul’s - a venue just a stone’s throw from where Syd was born.

Simon Gunton- Musical Director

Specialising in the trombone, sackbut, bass trumpet and euphonium, Simon Gunton is an exceptionally gifted musician and workshop facilitator, who has reached the highest standards of performance across a huge range of musical styles and genres.

After receiving a scholarship to, and graduating from, the Royal College of Music, Simon became a member of both calypso band Arrow (who, among other releases, recorded the original Hot Hot Hot), and award-winning brass ensemble the Wallace Collection. With the Wallace Collection and its successor The Golden Section, Simon has played at venues including Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the Barbican, Wigmore Hall, Moscow Tchaikovsky Hall and Moscow Conservatoire. In 1994, Simon won a Best of Fringe Award at the Edinburgh Festival for two-man show Fools Progress.

As a classical trombonist, Simon has performed as principal trombonist with the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and London Sinfonietta. His opera and ballet work has included appearances with the Covent Garden Orchestra, English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Simon has performed as a soloist at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre and, on the penultimate night of the 1996 proms, the Royal Albert Hall. Playing the sackbut, Simon has appeared with the Gabrieli Consort (with whom he won a Gramophone Award), the London Classical Players and The King’s Consort.

Simon’s commercial work has seen him perform on hits by/tour with artists such as Robbie Williams, Boyzone, Westlife, Mariah Carey, George Michael, the Pet Shop Boys, Catherine Jenkins, Paul McCartney, Missy Elliot, Lou Reed, G4, Yousson Dour, The Whalers, Brian Ferry and Elton John. He has played on soundtracks for films including Casino Royal, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, Sharks Tale, Shrek 1&2, Bee Movie and Mission Impossible. He conducted on the score for Tim Burton’s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Simon’s West End credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Producers, Spamalot and Evita.

In the last decade, Simon has undertaken several projects as a composer, notably writing the music for the BBC’s Gormenghast and The Cazalets, Channel 4’s Home Help, and Escape Artists’ Adoreus - A Cambridge Cantata. Through this work, Simon discovered a love of helping others to create music. He has now worked in numerous primary and secondary schools, Higher Education establishments, hospitals, hospices, mental health hospitals and day centres, prisons, homeless centres, after school youth clubs and youth clubs specialising in work with excluded children. He has also undertaken education work for organisations such as the British Council, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Spitalfields Festival, the Royal Academy of Music and the Sydney, Paris and Moscow conservatoires.

Since 2004, Simon has dedicated part of his time to working as Artistic Director of arts and mental health charity Escape Artists. As well as facilitating the charity’s music-related education programmes, he is Joint Creative Director and Musical Director of The City Wakes.

Tor Cesay - Biography

Grafting her own pathway to musical success, homegrown UK talent, Tor Cesay is flipping the rap game on its head with her melodic flow and fiery feminine ways. And that’s no hype talk.

You may have been lucky enough to witness Tor spitting over the BBC Concert Orchestra at Urban Classic, or see her performance at Glastonbury 2007 on the BBC Introducing Stage. Perhaps you recognize her vocals from the live performance at the Olympics 2012 winner’s announcement viewed by one billion people?

Hooking up with vocalists and producers from places as diverse as Poland, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina, the long anticipated compilation 'Beatz International' sees Tor stamping her mark on the music scene with a truly international flavor. After the success of debut single 'Strivin'' (IRB records), 'Beatz International', licensed from Pinch of Salt Records File Records in Japan (June 13th 2008), is ready to drop in the UK, with the potential to excite music lovers everywhere. Energetic, chest thumping tracks such as 'Going home', produced by Rapid 'Ruff Squad' (Tinchy Strider, Ghetto) see Tor setting the bar once again for female MC's. The all star female anthem features Nottingham’s finest Pariz 1, and Manchester’s rising star, Envy, showcasing the UK's finest.

Breaking from the confines of the tight-knit UK hip hop underground. Supporters include Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Mary Ann Hobbs (Radio 1), Dynamite MC (Kiss 100), Dan Greenpeace (Galaxy), Giles Peterson (Radio1) and MP Steven Hepburn.

Signing a five album deal with Go!Beat Records, which consequently dissolved due to financial matters, saw Tor put to use her business know-how to accomplish her musical quest. Building a studio, and travelling with the Red Bull academy in 2006 sparked Tor's venture of setting up independent record label, Pinch of Salt Records. 'Back On The Endz' , the first single released In July 2007 Featured on MTV Base daytime playlist ‘Brand Spanking New’.

Tor gained major airplay from DJ's on Radio1, 1Xtra, Kiss and Choice FM with the release of 'Beatz in the Capital', a mixtape mixed by Show 'N' Prove, including 'Black girls', a stunning remix of Bashy's breakthrough track. Recording a live set at Maida Vale for Radio 1 saw Tor take a solid spot on the homepage as "The rising star". Follow up compilation 'Beatz International' is a fine introduction to the MC before her debut album drops in March 2009.

Ms Dynamite's 'When I fall in Love', Bugz in the Attic's 'Move Aside', Soundbwoy Ent's remix of top 20 hit 'Never Wanna say', don’t even scratch the surface of Tor's previous collaborations. Producers include Rashard Smith (Lauren Hill/Biggie/Erykah Badu/Nas), and UK super producer, DJ Mentat (Roots Manuva/Skinnyman).

Exciting new features include Blak Twang's LP 'Speaking from Experience' alongside chart topping Estelle ('Nu Nuh'). Forthcoming tribute to Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd, 'The City Wakes', directed by award winning musician Simon Gunton will see Tor performing fresh interpretations of Syd's classics. Super group, 'Mongrel', created by Jon McClure (Reverend and the makers), are to release album 'More than Heavy’, on October 27th which Tor also features. ('Hit from the morning sun' and 'Barcode'). The all-star line up includes Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys), Drew McConnel (Babyshambles) and UK rapper Lowkey.

‘Beatz International’ is out ‘November 10th. Following the video 'Going home' is the bass driven video 'You don’t know' ft Tawiah (Mark Ronson). Radio 1 predict Tor Cesay to be a recipient of a BRIT Award in 2010 for 'Best British Female Solo Artist'. It’s time to catch Tor while you can!
