Whether you are traveling by plane, train or car, a lengthy trip can be tough on the kids. Young kids get bored easily and car start whining - making the trip significantly less enjoyable for you. Keeping your kids busy (and thus preventing cranky children, which can lead to cranky parents) takes a bit of planning but is well worth the effort.
If you are moving abroad, don't try and pack everything on to the plane. Use international movers to ship your items safely and you will be able to enjoy your trip knowing that your belongings are secure. Bring only a few things with you on the plane, such as an activity book and crayons for the kids. You can even print out some online games (such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku or tic tac toe boards) to plan with your kids.
Bring a deck of cards and keep your kids busy by teaching them how to play some classic card games. This can keep them busy and entertained for hours. Many stores sell magnetic games specifically designed for travel. The game pieces attach to the compact game board by magnet so you won't lose them during a turbulent flight. Choose a game that is easy enough to play for even your youngest child.
Other games require little to no planning - only an imagination is needed. Eye spy and 20 questions are great fun on an airplane. If you are in a car, you can sing songs together or play the license plate game. There are many sites that give you great ideas for family fun on road trips.
A portable gaming system is a great way to keep kids quiet and busy during long flights or rides. They are a pricey alternative to classic card or board games, but can keep your kids busy for hours on end. If you are fortunate enough to have a DVD player in your vehicle, pop in a kids movie with plenty of sing-along songs so you can still interact with your kids.
Long trips are not easy on your young ones. Prepare for travel with children by packing an activity kit to keep your kids busy and keep their mind off of the confinement. If you are in a car, it is advisable to take frequent breaks. Travel doesn't have to be a dreadful experience for both parent and child. If you arm yourself with adequate games you will both survive the trip!
